WHEREAS the Site hitherto held by the British Govern-

ment at Canton has proved insufficient for the accommodation

of the British Community, His Excellency Laou on behalf of

the Chinese Government has agreed to grant and let to the

British authorities a certain Lot of Land belonging to the

Chinese Government called and know as the Shameen Site,

situated on the Western side of the City of Canton in the

Province of Kwangtung and bounded on the North by the New

Canal, on the East by the French Ground and on the North

and West by the Reach of the River called the Pih-ngo-tau

and said to contain Two hundred and sixty four Mou equal

in English measurement to Forty four Acres.

The said Site or piece of Land is hereby granted to the

British Authorities to be held by them in perpetuity for

such uses and purposes as Her Britannic Majesty's Govern-

ment shall see fit, in consideration of the yearly rent of

one thousand five hundred Copper Cash per Mou to be paid by

Her Britannic Majesty's Government immediately after the

execution of this agreement and at the expiration of every

successive twelve months from the date thereof.

The said Chinese Government hereby resign all right,

title and claim to the said Lot of Land as long as the

rent
